I would also like to make a comment on your quote you put up.
Deterrence is so hard to measure. That's why no one can really use the arguement for the death penalty. "If the punishment is we kill you if you kill someone, I don't kill because you would kill me." I really don't think deterence holds that much affect unless if it's within a small number of people. It's almost like saying, "This rock keeps tigers away...and look no tigers" ALSO I am the one selling the rocks...so of course I'm going to say that my rocks work. This is what RIAA is saying in this statement you quoted. I really think what has "dettered" a sizeable number of people is the advent FINALLY of purchasing mp3's through pay services for little money and only songs ones want.
Ok now onto another somethin something.
http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=entertainmentNews&storyid=20...Our boy, James Cameron, says digital animation will save the industry. Hmm let me see here. Star Wars, lost gleam because of too much digital affects, actors were acting to people in green suits, so no chemistry really took place. The mid years of movies was by far more profitable and memorable than they are now. The best "special affects" they had was with people like, the master, Ray Harry Housin. Also excellent movies like Tron and Ghostbusters used crayons to help the movie affects. But still I believe that the over use of special affects will kill the movie industry not help it. Also if Hollywood keeps writing CRAP! that is banged out worse than a monkey on an acid trip...I think we found our culprit for why H-Wood sucks.
Let's look at it another way...we have no more actors and we just have digital animation, everything is synthisized and the movie is about oh let's say a Will Farrel type animation trys to save a gay duck from te evil lord Zod. Critics hail it as a "masterpiece of our time". However it flops...piracy is supposedly to blame. However no one is pirating anymore because all the movies suck.
Then let's take a chick flick. Man meets girl...they fall in love...girl is murdered...man grieves an learns a life lesson from this girl that changed his life from what he once was. You have chemistry from the actors in the picture...you can feel the love, the tension, etc. You can't feel that way about things you know are animated. How many of us cried at Passion of the Christ....now how many of us cried at Final Fantasy - Spirits Within, and I'm not talking disappointment crying either. That's another example of how animators let us down. Sure we're wooed by them but with a sucky story line...I'd rather watch Howard the Duck...in 3-D than FF again. At least there I could feel the love between duck and woman!
