Last week was a "housekeeping" session in which the party restocked following a lengthy period away from civilization. Temmie got her hands on her coveted Coat of Many Pockets and the party's slightly overdue payment from Peace for Prosperity finally materialized (all 70GP of it). The party also purchased ten potions of healing, two potions of fire breath, and one potion of animal friendship, along with various other supplies.

Shortly after wrapping up their shopping spree, the party heard a commotion nearby and quickly responded. They found two of Harburk's deputies in a standoff with Rotharr Hatherhand, Braelen's father, who was holding one of town's former leaders at knife-point. The leader was imprisoned awaiting trial for being part of The Believers, a group of important townsfolk that was collaborating with the earth cult that had (literally) undermined Red Larch and committed at least one murder in the cult's name.

Rotharr was threatening to kill the cultist, Ilmeth Waelvur, for betraying the town and bringing the fire cultists down upon them. There is some sense of irony here as Rotharr was at least tangentially involved in The Believers himself. Between the deputies, Constable Harburk, and the party, Rotharr was eventually talked down and arrested.

Constable Harburk beseeched the party's assistance in protecting The Believers until they could receive a fair trial. He was concerned that Rotharr wasn't the only one that wanted The Believer's dead, and that vengeance would be particularly desireable following the attacks on the town earlier that day. The party agreed to take the prisoners to the Feathergale Spire for disposition while waiting for a traveling magistrate to show up. In exchange, Red Larch would help the slaves from the monastery mines get settled or travel elsewhere.

After a much-needed night of rest at the local inn, the party set off with their captives in tow.
Our last session was a three-hour slaughter-fest, and you're all a bunch of murder hobos. The party completed the mass melee they started at the previous session, killing the remainder of the 15 monks and priests they stumbled across in the dining hall. As though that weren't enough, the party then moved on to the last obstacle on the first floor of the monastery, Qarbo himself. The party once again masqueraded as hapless monks, with Exees managing to convince Qarbo that they'd just caught intruders in the front hall.

As the group led Qarbo to more opportune ambush area, one of his Black Earth guards noticed that Hytton was a bit short for a monk. Not missing a beat, Emma slammed the exterior door shut, splitting both the party and Qarbo's retinue. Still hurting from their previous encounter, the party fought valiantly, eventually bringing an unrelenting Qarbo and both of his guards to their violent ends.

After violently attacking the four monks assembled in the scriptorium, the party attempted to blockade themselves in the room to recover from the battle. While looking through the books scattered across various desktops, the party came across the manuscript of one Marlos Urnrayle. In the testament, Marlos declared that he is the "Prophet of Earth" and that he was drawn through dreams and visions to a place called "the Fane of the Eye". There, he discovered "Ironfang, the Holy Implement of Earth Power", a weapon of some sort that he took as his own.

Urnrayle then established the Temple of Black Earth in the ruins of a long-abandoned Dwarven stronghold that exists far below this very building, the Sacred Stone Monastery. The manuscript ends with Marlos stating that he is nurturing something called "the Black Geode", and that when the time was right, "the Evergrowing Mountain shall come and remake these lands in his own image."

Minutes later, a sharp knock came from the eastern door. For some unfathomable reason, the party elected ??? to answer the door, pretending that nothing was wrong. After a series of completely unbelievable lies, the monks at the door turned away, making it a tad obvious they knew something was up. The party then leapt back into action, attacking the monks and making quick work of them. Unfortunately, the group was unable to stifle the monks before their screams summoned their peers from the neighboring dojo.

Though already growing battle-weary, the party fought valiantly against several more monks. Just as they were nearing the point of victory, a particularly badass blind monk appeared and tore into the party. She managed to drop Temmie in a single blow and dealt grievous wounds to Hytton, Oni, and Exees. Ultimately, the party prevailed, adding her body to the pile of corpses littering the hallway. After a hasty cleanup, the party made a quick exit back to the walled garden before kicking in a door to a seemingly disused stairwell.

After a week on the road, the party finally arrived in Red Larch. They were greeted by Constable Harburk who inquired about the bandits they encountered the previous evening. After hearing their tale and taking the prisoner into custody, Harburk requested their assistance in clearing out a bandit encampment just west of town. The group agreed, in exchange for 50GP per person, a round of drinks at the Helm at Highsun, and a night's stay at the Swinging Sword.

The party visited Vallivoe's Sundries and purchased three Potions of Healing. These restore 2d4+2 HP and take an action to use. The party then hit the Helm at Highsun tavern to partake in free alcohol and mingle with the citizenry. They encountered a group of old ladies, led by Minthra "Minny" Mhandhyvver. Her grandaughter, Pell, encountered a "ghost" east of town. The party decided to investigate.

The party encountered three goblins and a half-ogre whom they killed mercilessly. They found an old stone door leading into the mountainside and traveled inside, discovering a tomb of a long-dead noble. The party got whooped by the ghost of the noble's butler, Godfrey. He ended up being the All Valley Boxing Champ of 1405 DR and managed to knock out Hytton with a nasty punch to the skull.

The party bravely chose to run away! They earned a total of 450 XP (90 XP per person), including partial XP for the fight with Godfrey.

RECAP!

The party arrived at a stately, spire-shaped castle rising out of the highlands of the Sumber Hills. After scouting around for period of time, the party decided to throw caution to the wind and merely waltz up to the imposing building. After ringing a bell located on a conspicuous post, the party was greeted from afar by Savra Belabranta. Claiming to be traveling aristocrats, the party convinced Savra to lower the drawbridge and invite them into Feathergale Spire. Savra mentioned their impeccable timing that coincides with the Spire's tenth anniversary before taking the party directly to the pinnacle of the Spire. There, she introduces them to the Spire's captain, Thurl Merosska.

Merosska greeted the party and invited them to join him for a meal along with several of the Feathergale Spire's senior knights. Merosska explained that the Spire was built by a number of wealthy Waterdeep citizens that enjoyed riding aerial mounts, including giant vultures, hippogriffs, and similar creatures. The Feathergale Spire seems to be a combination of a greek fraternity, de facto law enforcement agency, and a social club.

The meal was unexpectedly interrupted by the arrival of a knight that loudly informed the gathering of a manticore sighting. Thurl Merosska held out a golden ring, offering it to whomever brought him the manticore's head. The party then sprang into action, following several knights to the spire's pinnacle. There they found four hippogriffs waiting to carry them into the battle.

The party chased down the manticore and fought valiantly, replacing the Feathergale Knights as they withdrew one by one. Temmie saved one Knight from plunging to his certain death, earning his grudging gratitude. Not to be outdone, Oni daringly leapt from his hippogriff onto the back of the Hippogriff, thus turning the aerial battle into a close quarters melee. The last Feathergale Knight remaining in the battle managed to get the killing blow, but he selflessly offered the victory to Oni and crew in light of their outsized contribution to the battle.

The party returned to Red Larch following their encounter with Godfrey the ghost butler (in which Craig got whooped). After spending the night at the Swinging Sword inn, the party set out to deal with the bandits mentioned by Constable Harburk when they reached town.

The party encountered 4 bandits and their leader, along with a starving brown bear. The party managed to win a very tough battle. The bear escaped from his cage during the melee, finishing off the leader and eating his carcass, eventually carrying the remainder off into the woods. The party then entered a cave behind the encampment, encountering another bandit that also put up one hell of a fight. After finishing him off, the party searched the cave, finding some decent loot. The captain had a note stating, "The Spire is in need of additional armaments and provisions. Focus your efforts on traffic along the Kheldell Path."

The party returned to Red Larch and reported their success to Harburk. The constable paid them 200GP (50GP each) for their troubles. The party then returned to the Swinging Sword, where Kaylessa requested their assistance in "handling" a crazed man west of town that is scaring caravans with rumors of a plague. She offered a week's stay at the inn in exchange for the party's assistance.

The party was just entering the town of Red Larch after fighting their way through a flame priestess and a cadre of her minions. The party also managed to rescue Braelen once again, who had been caught in the process of stabbinating one of attackers. The town itself appeared to be in rough shape with several buildings in various stages of not-not-on-fire.

Upon entering the town, the party was immediately confronted by another flame priest flanked by two massive flaming skulls. The party engaged in witty banter with the miscreant, learning that his name was Torvan Flamebrand and that he apparently belonged to a religious order that worshipped fire. In turn, Torvan asked the party what the town of Red Larch meant to them and whether or note they were willing to die for the town's inhabitants. The party responded by beating the snot out of him and disembodied compatriots.

During the uproar, a Half-Elven wizard/cleric by the name of Salty stumbled out of bed and joined the melee. Having nothing better to do, she decided to tag along for a while.

After slaying Orieoth, the self-proclaimed Lord of Lance Rock, the party returned triumphantly to a seemingly upbeat Red Larch. The party reported their success to Kaylessa Irkell, the owner of the Swinging Sword inn. Their celebration was cut short, however, when an earthquake suddenly rocked the town. Moments later, the screams of children could be heard echoing from the roadway. The ground had given way and four children had fallen into a dark underground cavern.

Three villagers attempted to stop the party and other townsfolk from entering the sinkhole, but the party paid little attention. The group sprang into action and rescued the children, much to the relief of the worried townsfolk. Intrigued by the dubious warnings and the structure found below ground, the party chose to explore further. They discovered a room with several giant rats feasting on the grisly corpses of three seemingly human corpses. They quickly dispatched the giant rats and the wererat that appeared moments later. Each corpse had a mysterious symbol roughly carved into their foreheads.

The party found other rooms with enigmatic features, including a large floating rock in one room and a lifelike statue of an ancient dwarf in another. Finally, the party ended up in a room containing a thuggish half-orc watching over a small human boy that was brutally pinned under a number of large rocks. The party exchanged words and eventually blows with the half-orc, ending his life and freeing Braelen from captivity.

-b0b

After taking some time to recover from a series of tough battles and play with their newly-found collection of magic items, Hytton discovered a large metallic lever protruding from the wall. Proving once again that dwarves can't be trusted, Hytton decided to pull on the lever, causing a set of nearby stairs to collapse into a slip-and-slide of doom. Unbeknownst to the party, this also released a caged Umber Hulk in the room below. Fortunately, the steep incline of the stairs prevented the Umber Hulk from reaching the vulnerable party. The party would remain absolutely safe from the horror below as long as nobody was suicidal enough to flip the lever back up.

Which Hytton immediately chose to do.

The party sustained a number of nasty wounds in the protracted battle, but eventually managed to knock the Hulkster out of commission. Moving down the oil-slicked staircase, the party found the remnants of what appeared to be an ancient mine. Of note was an incredibly ornate stairwell that led deeper into the earth. Hytton's fetish for dwarven stonework paid off as he recognized the obscenely detailed handiwork of the stairwell's carvers. It was decidedly older than the rest of the mines.

While attempting to break through the iron bars protecting the entrance to the stairwell, the party was ambushed by a grick, a large snake-like creature with four massive tentacles surrounding a toothy maw. The grick chomped on Exees and Oni for a bit but was quickly laid to rest.

The party then returned to the iron gate at the top of the stairwell, eventually breaking off the heavy lock before remembering they had a number of unused keys in their possession. Exees, in a display of excellent decision making, split off from the rest of the party and began exploring the mines near the entrance to the stairwell. He stealthily snuck up behind an orc-like creature called an orog and four slaves. Exees accidentally broke wind and attracted the creature's attention before he could strike. The rest of the party hurried to the ranger's aid, quickly subduing the orog.

Following a long trek back to the Sacred Stone Monastery and having dispatching the limited resistance found therein, the party returned to the deep stairwell they had forsaken previously. 250 feet of descending darkness awaited. Upon reaching the bottom of the stairwell, the party made their first tentative foray into the darkness, finding stiff resistance awaiting them.

The ancient stone hallway at the bottom of the stairwell led into a large open cavern. The cracked stone walkway cut across the center of the cavern, seemingly held aloft by its own inherent strength alone. Beneath the walkway was nothing but inky darkness, and the ceiling likewise was out of site. Sadly, the dwarves that built the walkway had little concern for workplace safety, and the walkway lacked any form of guardrails.

Despite the word "trap" all but being written on the stone surface, the party ventured into the bleak blackness, hellbound on finding someone (or something) to kill. Their wishes were quickly granted as they were set upon by three stone gargoyles. Unfortunately for the party, the gargoyles had wings and they didn't. Their attackers were quick to press this advantage, repeatedly trying to knock various heroes from the precipice. The party had a number of close calls, but ultimately dispatched the gargoyles without taking a dive.

Several of our heroes were moderately wounded and exhausted. The party determined that discretion was (temporarily) the better part of valor and withdrew to catch their collective breath.

On the brink of exhaustion, the party made a new friend in the form of the lich Renwick Caradoon. Renwick keeps to himself in an isolated area of the monastery, where he has seemingly holed up for countless decades in pursuit of unknown magical research. An incredibly powerful entity, Renwick has largely ignored the priests that refurbished the rest of the monastery several years ago. Although they've apparently tried to recruit him in the past, they're smart enough to leave him a wide berth. Although Renwick didn't seem to be terribly fond of visitors, he was kind enough to give the party permission to use his dilapidated bedroom to rest and recover.

Now fully rested, the party continued their mission to wipe out every last priest in the monastery. After leaving Renwick's domain, the party first visited the distillery. With promises of a glorious party that would occur later that evening, a disguised Hytton persuaded the two priests located therein to hand over a "special reserve" of particularly strong brandy they'd been saving for a special occasion. The group then made their way across the monastery, finding several empty dormitories full of austere-looking bunks.

Feeling rather cocky at their good fortune, the party continued bumbling through the monastery until they happened upon a very unhappy group of priests in the dining hall. The group fought valiantly, using the hallway as a natural bottleneck to slow their attackers' progress. Roughly half of the attackers split off and disappeared through a back entrance, leaving the remaining half to get cut down by the party. We pick up during a brief lull in the battle, with the party having just caught sight of the rear echelon moving their way.

The party continued eastward, eventually arriving at the reclusive monastery Thurl had warned them about. The group debated between knocking and merely kicking in the front door, but eventually decided discretion was the better part of valor and began sneaking around the imposing building's perimeter. They quickly discovered a seemingly deserted garden protected only by a meager 6' wall. The party scaled the wall and surreptitiously checked the locks on three different adjoining doors.

Shortly after breaking into the garden, two of the massive earthen statues came to life and began to attack. The party fought bravely and, despite taking heavy damage, was able to destroy the gargoyles without attracting any undue attention. The group then snuck into the monastery through a poorly-secured door, finding themselves in an empty hallway. Through the use of Oni's "Pass Without a Trace" ability and Temmie's timely Invisibility spell, the group was able to explore both the Abbess's personal chambers and a distillery without being detected. Their luck ran out when they decided to openly approach a monk working in a scriptorium. They pressed the advantage afforded through surprise and quickly cut down the four monks that confronted them.

Having tracked down the murderous Shylo to his cabin in the woods, the party spent the majority of the session trading blows with the crazed recluse. Despite his fierce attacks, the group was able to drop him in a matter of minutes. He sank to his knees with a sinister grin on his lips, his body fading into a cloud of smoke as the moonlight spilled across his form.

Without hesitation, Hytton kicked in the front door of the cabin, revealing a disused and largely empty living space. The only items of note were a handful of hand-carved trophies on the mantlepiece. Closer inspection revealed they were championship trophies from the annual Whitwick Buff Man Competition, all bearing the name Shylo. The party then rushed into the only remaining room of the house, in which they once again found Shylo sitting in his rocking chair sharpening his axe.

This time, Shylo was playing for keeps. Following the party's ambush, Shylo quickly transformed into the form of a hulking werewolf. His attacks were fast and furious, each preceded by his crazed muttering that was made all the odder by his lupine form. He would whisper "Sharpening an axe" or "Brandishing a Knife" before attacking with those weapons, or "actual cannibal" before sinking his teeth into his target.

The party took a number of grievous wounds, keeping Hytton busy with the healing. It was ultimately Hytton that needed it the worst, however, as Shylo managed to rip the vertically-impaired cleric's throat out with a timely bite to the neck. Fortunately, Temmie quickly leapt to the rescue with a healing potion that put Hytton back in the fight.

Ultimately, the party was able to subdue Shylo for a second time. In a moment of inspiration, Oni took the werewolf from behind with a fatal decapitation that ended Shylo's reign of terror.

Following a quick rest, the party looted what little they could find in the cabin. Shylo's arquebus, axe, and one of his paws were scavenged, along with four of Shylo's Buff Man trophies. Upon returning to town, Cedric Shaw congratulated the party on their defeat of "Shylo the Buff" and rewarded the party with 100 gold pieces, quite a haul for such an impoverished town. Lilly then led the party back to the forest clearing where she found them.
