Comparing an MMO running on dedicated hardware with a fair amount of latency leeway to an FPS is a bit of a stretch.

Wow, really?  I think your mom runs bigger "instances" than that!

Nah, if hundreds of people started PVPing in one zone in WoW (Which they occasionaly try to do) the game gets so lagged out that it usualy becomes unplayable......

But in theory it is possible lol

So that's just one more reason WoW and MMOs suck.  Not only do you just run around or mine for gold forever, or build furniture for your house...but then you can't even kill a decent amount of people...and you have to get their permission first.

Worst of all, you have to pay for the pleasure - twice.  Once for the software, and again every single month for the service.

Honestly, that is one of the biggest MMO turnoffs for me.  It's not that $12-$15 is expensive or anything, but sometimes I like to pick up an old game after a few years and play it again for a couple days.  With an MMO, that's not really an option.

WoW is by far the best MMO when it comes to "Picking up where you left off" they've really made it casual friendly.  Much to the disapointment of the hardcore raiders Wink hahah

And on a pvp server you never need permission to kill anyone Patsy haha....only on non pvp servers....and thats your choice to choose from which type to play on.

I never minded the pay per month thing.  Mostly because I usualy spend FAR more than 15 dollars in a month to play a game.

Hell if I only buy ONE game a month that runs me 60 dollars.....and I've been known to buh 3 or 4 lol.

Quote:
In a conference today at Valve headquarters in Seattle regarding Steam, Valve's online distribution platform, the company announced a new remote storage solution for data from games.

This free service, known as Steam Cloud, will extend the Steam service to allow you to save progress from games, options, keyboard bindings and possibly much more from your games on Steam.

There will be no limit to the storage you can use, and all data will be saved automatically to the servers. Even video replays and screenshots can be stored.

As you would expect, Valve's own offerings will be the first to support the Cloud system, including the Half-Life series, Counterstrike and Team Fortress 2. Left 4 Dead will support it from release.

For any developers out there, Steam Cloud will be available in the Steamworks tools.

This sounds kinda nifty.  One of the "goals" behind Steam was to make games more portable.  You can install a game on your home desktop, your laptop, and your work desktop and play the game you purchased on any system (one at a time, of course).  With this service, you'll even be able to take your game saves and configuration options with you, which I think will be pretty handy.

I've never been a fan of the soul caliber games.  Street Fighter was fun because the button combinations were practical.  Now you have to press 20 button cominations in order to punch!

Doom 4 anyone?  The new engine will be sweet. Here is a sample of it from a game called RAGE.

Speaking of Rage, I wonder what Briney thinks about Id's new mega-texture technology.  Is it as cool as it is hyped up to be?

Supposedly, id Tech 5 will support all the way up to 128k by 128k textures.  I'd love to see the file size on that bad boy.

Still, it's an interesting idea, and I'd love to find out how it translates into performance.

Let us know what your graphics guru says about it!
