BANGKOK, Thailand - Thai police officers who break rules will be forced to wear hot pink armbands featuring "Hello Kitty," the Japanese icon of cute, as a mark of shame, a senior officer said Monday.

Police officers caught littering, parking in a prohibited area, or arriving late — among other misdemeanors — will be forced to stay in the division office and wear the armband all day, said Police Col. Pongpat Chayaphan. The officers won't wear the armband in public.

The striking armband features Hello Kitty sitting atop two hearts.

"Simple warnings no longer work. This new twist is expected to make them feel guilt and shame and prevent them from repeating the offense, no matter how minor," said Pongpat, acting chief of the Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok.

"(Hello) Kitty is a cute icon for young girls. It's not something macho police officers want covering their biceps," Pongpat said.

He said police caught breaking the law will be subject the same fines and penalties as any other members of the public.

"We want to make sure that we do not condone small offenses," Pongpat said, adding that the CSD believed that getting tough on petty misdemeanors would lead to fewer cases of more serious offenses including abuse of power and mistreatment of the public by police officers.

Hello Kitty, invented by Sanrio Co. in 1974, has been popular for years with children and young women. The celebrity cat adorns everything from diamond-studded jewelry, Fender guitars and digital cameras to lunch boxes, T-shirts and stationery.

It definitely sounds more effective than forcing an officer to take a day of paid leave (vacation) as punishment!

UN Rejects Taiwan's Application for Membership

By Andrew Ryan
Taipei

24 July 2007
counterterrorismblog.org

The United Nations has rejected Taiwan's latest bid for membership, saying that a 1971 resolution recognizes Beijing - not Taipei - as China's representative to the world body. Andrew Ryan has more on this story from Taipei.

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian on Tuesday spoke out against the United Nation's latest rejection of the island's bid for membership.

Mr. Chen says the Taiwan government believes that only the U.N. Security Council and the General Assembly have the right to decide on the application of the 23 million people of Taiwan to join the United Nations under the name "Taiwan." He says that no individual, including the office of the secretary-general, has the right to decide on Taiwan's application.

The secretary-general's office returned the application without having it discussed by the General Assembly. The secretary-general's staff says that under resolution 2748, which granted Beijing membership, Taiwan cannot have separate membership.

A spokesman for Taiwan's Foreign Ministry, David Wang, spoke against the U.N.'s rejection on Tuesday.

"Of course we feel very regrettable that [the] U.N. turned down Taiwan's application," he said. "We are fighting the resolution 2748. In our view, the resolution is outdated because it only discussed the admittance of the PRC [People's Republic of China] to the U.N., but nothing about Taiwan. So, in this global village, we think it's about time to review the whole situation."

Taiwan has applied for membership - and has been rejected - every year since 1993. But this year, for the first time, Taipei applied for membership under the name "Taiwan." Past bids were under the island's official name - the "Republic of China".

Despite the frustration at the rejection, the Foreign Ministry's Wang says it was no surprise, and that it will not be the last attempt.

"We understand pretty well that the road to membership is, you know, long and arduous," said Wang. "But still, if we don't do it today, sooner or later we have to face it. And what we [are] concerned is, if it's the right thing to do, its better to do it earlier than later."

China claims the self-governed island as its territory and slammed the U.N. application, saying that President Chen is trying to split the nation. Beijing has vowed to retake Taiwan by force if its government tries to declare formal independence.

Taipei had U.N. membership until 1971, when the seat was handed over to Beijing. Since then, the Beijing government has worked hard to diplomatically isolate Taiwan. Just over 20, mostly small, nations have full diplomatic ties with Taipei.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt.  I can't say this is unexpected, though, considering we're talking about the UN.

Hitler's Music Collection Turns Up in Dead Russian Soldier's Attic

Tuesday, August 07, 2007
By Roger Boyes

BERLIN —  Adolf Hitler, the most notorious champion of Richard Wagner and “racially pure” German music, banished Jewish and Russian musicians from the concert halls of the Third Reich — but apparently listened secretly to their work.

New light has been shed on the Nazi leader’s musical tastes by the discovery of what are said to be a hundred of his gramophone records found in the attic of a former Soviet intelligence officer, Lev Besymenski.

“There were classical recordings, performed by the best orchestras of Europe and Germany with the best soloists of the age,” Mr Besymenski said in a document explaining how the records came into his possession.

The 86-year-old, who helped to interrogate captured Nazi generals, died this summer. The document and the record collection have now been made available to Der Spiegel magazine.

The Soviet intelligence officer had found them in Hitler’s Chancellery in Berlin in May 1945, still packed in crates. Hitler’s staff were counting on an evacuation to the Nazi leader’s Alpine hideaway on the Obersalzberg and it was known that he could only relax with his music.

Besymenski, then a captain in military intelligence, kept quiet about the records during his lifetime for fear that he would be accused of looting.

The most astonishing fact about the records — essentially Hitler’s “Best of . . .” collections — is the presence of Jewish performers. Among the recordings is a Tchaikovsky concerto performed by the virtuoso Polish Jewish violinist Bronislaw Huberman. Hitler would have been aware, while listening to Huberman’s playing, that he had founded the Palestine Orchestra in 1936 (which went on to be the foundation of today’s Israel Philharmonic Orchestra) and that he was living in enforced exile.

The Austrian Jewish pianist Artur Schnabel, whose mother was killed by the Nazis, also had his work included in Hitler’s personal collection. It is not known which records in the collection were listened to most frequently, nor have they been formally catalogued.

“I’m not terribly surprised by Hitler’s record choices,” said James Kennaway, of Stanford University. “Nazi music policy was pretty incoherent. Stravinsky was played in the Third Reich because he was known to have right-wing views, Bartok because Hungary was a German ally.” Dr Kennaway, a leading musicologist who specialises in the Nazi period, added: “The only real point of consistency in Nazi policy was antiSemitism, so the Schnabel and Huberman recordings do stand out.”

Hitler had spelt out his view of Jewish culture in Mein Kampf. “There was never a Jewish art and there is none today,” he wrote, adding that the “two queens of the arts, architecture and music, gained nothing original from the Jews”.

Roger Moorhouse, a historian and the author of Killing Hitler, said that the record collection, if authentic, suggested a contradiction between the Fuhror's aesthetic and political values. He said: “It is interesting that being Russian or Jewish did not disqualify a musician from a place in Hitler’s record collection. There was probably a separation in his world view between the political and the artistic.”

Although Hitler took piano lessons as a child, he displayed no personal musical talent. His surgeon, Hanskarl von Hasselbach, noted that “Hitler always whistled out of tune”.

His former radio operator, Rochus Misch, the last survivor of Hitler’s bunker, recently recalled how he had summoned his manservant to put on a record after a row with army commanders. “He just sat there, completely sunk in the music. The Föhrer needed distraction.”

Hitler was a hypocrite?  Whodathunkit?

Giant Missing Muffin Found, But Now It's Toast

http://www.wyff4.com/news/13858283/detail.html

GREER, S.C. -- A giant muffin that disappeared three weeks ago has been found, but the story doesn't have a happy ending.
The 4-and-1/2-foot-tall plastic pastry was stolen from a Bloom supermarket in Greer on July 19. Store managers said that the massive muffin was an important piece of company history and was worth about $4,500. The muffin made road trips around the Upstate as part of the supermarket chain's promotional campaigns.
Bloom Assistant Manager Joe Henderson said that the store filed a police report and offered a reward for the muffin's safe return.

Greer police said Thursday that there will be no safe return for the muffin. It was found burned into a puddle of melted plastic.
Officers were interviewing several juveniles when one admitted to know the whereabouts of the muffin.
Police went to the location near Highway 414 and Highway 253 in Greenville County where they found the muffin burned beyond recognition.
Bloom officials have decided not to press charges against the three teenagers, ages 15 to 17, so the teenagers’ names are being withheld.
The resident who helped police identify the vehicle used to steal the muffin will be given a $300 reward by Bloom. The grocery chain will also match that amount in a donation to Loaves and Fishes, a Greenville-based food bank.

Although I hope the perpetrators are caught, this article might have the best title I've ever seen!

Man gets thumbs surgically "whittled" for better iPhone use

By Amy-Mae Elliott Pocket-lint - Friday, August 10 10:13 am

File this one under "you cannot be serious" until we see pictorial evidence, but the North Denver News is reporting that a local man has had thumb-altering surgery so as to better use the touchscreen on his iPhone.

Thomas Martel, 28, of Bonnie Brae, described by the paper as "a big guy" was struggling to use the touchscreen keyboard on his iPhone so he did what any red-blooded gadget lover would do and got his thumb chopped about to better use the device.

Apparently his opposable digit got altered in a revolutionary new surgical technique known as "whittling."

"From my old Treo, to my Blackberry, to this new iPhone, I had a hard time hitting the right buttons, and I always lost those little styluses," explains Martel.

"Sure, the procedure was expensive, but when I think of all the time I save by being able to use modern handhelds so much faster, I really think the surgery will pay for itself in ten to fifteen years. And what it's saving me in frustration - that's priceless."

We'll spare you the surgical details, but leave you with this - Martel's new thumbs now appear small and "effeminate" in comparison to his otherwise very large hands.

We wonder if Apple will fly the guy out to their headquarters like Microsoft recently did for the oddball that got all the Zune tats?

...

I knew Apple users were freakin' crazy, but that takes the cake.

"South Carolina Inmate Hits Michael Vick With '$63,000,000,000 Billion Dollar' Lawsuit Alleging Al Qaeda Ties

Tuesday , August 14, 2007

Embattled NFL quarterback Michael Vick, facing federal charges related to his alleged participation in dogfighting, has been hit with a "$63,000,000,000 billion dollar" lawsuit filed by a South Carolina inmate who alleges the Atlanta Falcons star stole his pit bulls and sold them on eBay to buy "missiles from Iran," FOX News has learned.

Jonathan Lee Riches filed the handwritten complaint over "theft and abuse of my animals" on July 23 in the U.S. District Court in Richmond, Va.

Riches alleges that Vick stole two white mixed pit bull dogs from his home in Holiday, Fla., and used them for dogfighting operations in Richmond, Va. The complaint goes on to allege that Vick sold the dogs on eBay and “used the proceeds to purchase missiles from the Iran government.”

The complaint also alleges that Vick would need those missiles because he pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda in February of this year.

“Michael Vick has to stop physically hurting my feelings and dashing my hopes,” Riches writes in the complaint.

Riches wants $63 billion dollars “backed by gold and silver “ delivered to the front gates to the Williamsburg Federal Correctional facility in South Carolina. Riches is an inmate at the facility serving out a wire fraud conviction.

FOXNews.com attempted to contact Vick, but neither he nor his spokesman could be reached for comment.

This might go down in history as one of the greatest lawsuits of all time, bar none.
